Job Overview

A valve mechanic is responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, testing, and maintenance of various types of valves used in industrial settings. This includes, but is not limited to, steam valves, control valves, safety relief valves, gate valves, globe valves, and check valves. The primary goal is to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation by minimizing downtime and ensuring regulatory compliance.

You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of complex valves, which includes diagnosing malfunctions, performing preventative maintenance, and executing repairs on all critical control, block, and safety relief valves throughout the plant.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities

Inspection & Repair

Perform routine and preventative maintenance inspections on all plant valves.
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and operational issues.
Disassemble, clean, repair, and reassemble various valves.
Replace worn components such as packing, gaskets, seats, discs, actuators, and springs.
Machine and lap valve seats and discs to ensure precision sealing.

Testing & Certification

Perform in-line and bench testing of safety relief valves (SRVs) and control valves.
Calibrate and adjust valve actuators (pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric).
Complete required documentation.

Collaboration & Improvement

Coordinate with operations and other crafts to schedule and execute maintenance activities.
Participate in root cause analysis for valve failures and suggest corrective actions or design improvements.
Respond to emergency and unscheduled repair needs.

Safety

Adhere to safety regulations and procedures.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Follow lockout-tagout procedures.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.
Completion of an accredited technical/vocational program in pipefitting, millwright, or mechanical maintenance is strongly preferred.
Experience as a valve mechanic or a related mechanical role within a heavy industrial setting.

In-depth knowledge of valve types, construction, operation, and common failure modes.
Proficiency with P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) and mechanical blueprints.
Strong mechanical aptitude and skill in using precision measuring tools.
Familiarity with valve testing standards.
Demonstrated ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, hoists, and rigging equipment.
Relevant certifications are a plus.

Ability to complete multiple projects within time constraints.

Strong organizational skills.

Valid jurisdictional driver license.

Ability to work holidays, weekends, and overtime.

Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, requiring physical activity, including climbing ladders, working at elevations, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, standing, walking, and lifting 50 pounds.

Ability to work in areas that may be noisy, cold, hot, dirty, and able to wear personal protective equipment.
Ability to meet appropriate physical requirements as determined by corporate Health & Safety Department as prerequisites to perform certain tasks or training activities, for example, pulmonary function testing for respiratory protection, if required.
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
