A substation technician is responsible for ensuring the reliability of the electrical grid by maintaining high-voltage equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, and relay protection systems. This role requires a technical mindset, a deep commitment to safety, and the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and mechanical issues.

As a substation technician for APS Solutions, you will manage high-voltage assets. Responsibilities & Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities

Maintenance

Perform routine maintenance on power transformers, load tap changers, and high-voltage circuit breakers (SF6, vacuum, and oil).
Install new substation apparatus and wiring.

Testing & Troubleshooting

Conduct power factor testing, transformer oil sampling, breaker timing, and contact resistance tests.
Assist in testing and calibration of protective relay systems, SCADA equipment, and battery banks.

Repairs

Diagnose malfunctions in control circuits and power equipment.
Perform emergency repairs during outages or equipment failures.

Safety

Adhere to safety regulations and procedures.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Follow lockout-tagout procedures.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Electrical Technology, Electronics, or a related field; OR equivalent military/trade school training.
Experience in high-voltage electrical work, preferably in a substation environment.
Proficiency with electrical blueprints, wiring schematics, and control logic diagrams.
Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A CDL and a crane operator certification if required by the state.

Experience with specialized testing software preferred.
Knowledge of SCADA and automated distribution systems preferred.
Journeyman-level certification in substation or high-voltage electrical trades is a plus.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to complete multiple projects within time constraints.

Strong organizational skills.

Valid jurisdictional driver license.

Ability to work holidays, weekends, and overtime.

Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, requiring physical activity, including climbing ladders, working at elevations, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, standing, walking, and lifting 50 pounds.

Ability to work in areas that may be noisy, cold, hot, dirty, and able to wear personal protective equipment.
Ability to meet appropriate physical requirements as determined by corporate Health & Safety Department as prerequisites to perform certain tasks or training activities, for example, pulmonary function testing for respiratory protection, if required.
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
