Job Overview

A RICE unit operator is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine (RICE) units. This involves continuously monitoring the performance of the engines and their auxiliary equipment to ensure they function optimally and in accordance with established guidelines.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities

Operational Control

Operate and continuously monitor the status of RICE units and associated systems through control interfaces and local observation.
Execute proper start-up and shut-down sequences in accordance with established procedures and operational needs.
Observe and record key operating parameters to ensure optimal performance and make minor adjustments as directed or according to established guidelines.
Monitor and ensure the RICE units operate within environmental permit limits, particularly regarding emissions.
Assist with emissions monitoring and data collection as required.
If applicable, perform basic monitoring and adjustment of cooling water chemistry for the RICE units.

Repair & Maintenance

Identify, analyze, and respond appropriately to alarms and operational anomalies, performing basic troubleshooting steps.
Conduct regular walk-downs and inspections of RICE units and auxiliary equipment, identifying potential issues.
Perform basic preventive maintenance tasks as trained and directed.
Report complex issues to maintenance personnel and assist with repair if appropriate.

Collaboration & Documentation

Participate in safety meetings and initiatives.
Maintain clear and concise communication with control room operators, maintenance technicians, and other plant personnel.
Maintain accurate and timely logs of operational data, equipment status, maintenance activities, and any unusual events.

Safety

Adhere to safety regulations and procedures.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Follow lockout-tagout procedures.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Technical degree or vocational training in a related field (e.g., diesel mechanics, power generation technology) is preferred.
Experience in an industrial or power generation environment, preferably with reciprocating engines or similar mechanical equipment. Entry-level candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and relevant education will also be considered.
Basic understanding of internal combustion engine operation and associated systems.
Familiarity with industrial safety practices and procedures.
Ability to read and interpret basic technical manuals and diagrams.
Strong mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
Familiarity with industrial control systems, emissions monitoring equipment, and preventative maintenance programs is preferred.
Certifications relevant to power generation or engine maintenance is a plus.

Strong organizational skills.

Valid jurisdictional driver license.

Ability to work holidays, weekends, and overtime.

Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, requiring physical activity, including climbing ladders, working at elevations, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, standing, walking, and lifting 50 pounds.

Ability to work in areas that may be noisy, cold, hot, dirty, and able to wear personal protective equipment.
Ability to meet appropriate physical requirements as determined by corporate Health & Safety Department as prerequisites to perform certain tasks or training activities, for example, pulmonary function testing for respiratory protection, if required.
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
